Laurel Scott
Laurel Scott is a disco, jazz/funk, and R&B artist from Chicago, IL. Since she was little she spent every free moment enveloping herself in music. Her CD player was her best friend and she would use her weekly allowance to buy “best of “ CDs from all genres, opening herself to a brand new sonic universe with every chore. From the age of 7 she started taking violin lessons, which led to the start of an endless musical journey. After watching Prince’s Superbowl halftime show in 2005, at 11 years old she discovered she wanted something bigger for herself than could ever be imagined. That’s when she picked up the guitar and started singing in her bedroom. Due to the success of playing violin and the scholarships it offered, she focused solely on the instrument until graduating Elmhurst University in 2017, bringing with it a new genre to her repertoire that would change her life forever: jazz. After completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business, she delved into the world of music retail at Chicago Music Exchange. This career move opened a new portal, breathing life into the once distant dream of playing guitar, singing, and creating music from the depths of her own soul. Heavily influenced by guitar players such as Eddie Hazel, Little Beaver, and Isaiah Sharkey, mixed with the vocal and musical stylings of Amy Winehouse, Nai Palm, Stevie Wonder, Esther Phillips, and D’Angelo, she keeps it fresh while honoring the greats of our past. Her goal is to inspire creation, change, and new perspectives. It is important to tell the story of life’s gifts and challenges over and over again, to create a sense of community in a time when we need it most.
